Dear Oceanside Families and Community Members:

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I am confident that your children will have another year of learning, laughter, trials and triumphs. The goals established for the 2016-17 year focus on our commitment to excellence and determination to provide our students with enriching experiences that prepare them to achieve their own goals, now and in the future.

In this calendar, you will see many opportunities to be active in our school district’s family events, Board of Education meetings, PASS seminars for parents, DAWC events to promote wellness, sports, plays, concerts and more. These are wonderful ways to strengthen the ties that anchor us to this community and each other. I hope that you will get involved and stay involved!

This school year, we welcome our new faculty and staff members to Oceanside. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Diane Provvido, who served so capably as principal of School #5, as our new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Research. Taking the reins at School #5 is Scott Bullis, who comes to Oceanside as an experienced principal from the Amityville School District. Please join with me in wishing them well in their new roles.

A guiding principle for our schools has been, “Oceanside Schools…. anchored together by purpose, passion and people.” This year, we want to focus on people and have selected for our theme the words of the poet Maya Angelou: “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.”

Clouds, while temporary, can feel oppressive when overhead. So, too, with obstacles we all face in life. This community has always shown a remarkable commitment to supporting one another through good times and bad and I can almost imagine that Maya Angelou saw Oceansiders in action when she wrote those words. We truly are anchored by the people in our school community and I know that all of us benefit when we strive to be a rainbow for others.

I wish you and your children a happy, healthy and successful school year. May there be a rainbow in every cloud that comes your way.

Sincerely,
Phyllis S. Harrington, Ed.D.

Dear Oceanside Families and Community Members,

It is with pleasure that I welcome our returning families and those new to our school district to the 2016-2017 school year. As our students begin a new chapter of their educational journey, I too start a new one as your Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Research. I am honored to have been entrusted with this responsibility and look forward to working closely with all the members of our exceptional community.

A new school year is an exciting time for all. New relationships are established, new goals are set, and there are new challenges to meet. Our curriculum and instruction goals for this year include the implementation of new and innovative curricula such as;

  • A Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M) Unit: Coding and Programming
  • Exemplars, K-6 supplemental Mathematics Problem Solving Performance Tasks
  • Project Lead the Way Engineering and Virtual Business High School courses

We will also continue to enhance our rich technology initiatives with the introduction of Chromebooks to Grade 6 and the development of digital portfolios for our middle school students. Finally, fostering a love of reading and the written word remains at the forefront. With a renewed focus on independent reading, we look forward to introducing motivating experiences that do just that.

Working toward achieving our goals certainly did not wait until September. Over the summer, our dedicated and professional staff participated in a range of expert work, from curriculum writing projects in English Language Arts, mathematics, science and social studies, to staff development initiatives such as Google Basics and Google Certification.

Wonderful endeavors await our students this year; experiences that will immerse them in a culture of creativity, innovation and excitement for learning, all while nurturing responsible, caring and kind individuals. I look forward to greeting our students on the first day of school and all year long as this chapter of their school story unfolds; a story filled with the realization of their passions and potential.

Warm regards,

Diane Provvido

Dear Families and Community Members,
A great school district can only be built on a strong foundation. In Oceanside, we are fortunate to have a community that values education and a staff that is second to none. The way we look at it, student learning and well-being is everybody’s job, not just the classroom teacher’s.

The Oceanside School District is a forerunner in encouraging teachers to pursue National Board Certification, the teaching profession’s gold standard. As a result, we have one of the highest numbers of NBCTs on Long Island. Many of our teachers and administrators are sought-after experts in their fields and have led our district to win numerous accolades.  In one most recent example, Oceanside Middle School principal Dr. Allison Glickman-Rogers was a recipient of the Association for Middle Education 2014 Distinguished Educator Award.

Behind the scenes, the unsung heroes are our clerical staff, our buildings and grounds crew, our security monitors, food service workers and more.  They keep our schools running and make sure they are clean, well-maintained and orderly.

Our stringent hiring standards have helped us to build a top-notch staff and some of our best people support the operations of our Department of Community Activities. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of what DOCA has to offer, I encourage you to visit the Community Activities page on our website and download the activities brochure. There are many programs for children and adults of all ages. DOCA also offers the summer playground program as well as holiday themed events throughout the year.

Our staff, our students and our families make Oceanside a wonderful place to live and work. I wish your children a terrific school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jill DeRosa
