District Honored by Visit from Regent Roger Tilles

Regent Tilles Visits OSD To Discuss Teacher LeadershipLong Island’s regent, Roger Tilles, met with a group of Oceanside educators, including superintendent Dr. Phyllis S. Harrington, to discuss teacher leadership and how best to ensure that the people in the classroom with students are the best educators they can be.

Regent Tilles noted that the Oceanside School District has more nationally board certified teachers (NBCTs) per capita than elsewhere in New York State and questioned the assembled educators on what the OSD formula was that made this possible.

Several of the educators present shared their perspectives on growing teacher leaders, attributing the district’s success to open communication between administrators and teachers, mentoring new teachers, and stringent hiring practices that seek to identify intellectually strong candidates.
